This time Art reviews The Monkey
This is more a comedy than a spooky thing. I found it genuinely funny at parts and I like the kids’ parts. Which is good because it’s either the yutes or Hal/Bill so not much choice.
Aside from that, a fairly ho-hum but not unworthy of a watch film. Any excuse to see Rube Goldbergian style kills right? I dunno, the movie doesn’t have much to say and in turn neither do I.
I suppose I could wax poetic about unintended consequence, but that might just lead to more doom. I could talk about the inevitable nature of passed on trauma but that would be giving the film a ton of credit for its cheekiness I don’t think it earned.
I did like the “strike the goddam drum” line as I think we all feel that way at some point. I guess i don’t think of comedy as so much a lesser form that you can’t make an artistic point. But i think this one was stuck between Evil Dead and whatever greater point it had in mind and achieved neither.
I thought this was the best poster I could easily find. But I’m going to look up some of the other ones because they’re great.
So ultimately I give a “ho-hum” endorsement. Watch it or don’t. It’s not a bad movie.
