The Avocado Weekly Movie Thread (10/21)

Movieacados! It is still spooky season so I am running with the month of Octob-Horror and looking at aspects of horror movies that are cool and fun and awesome. Last week was an in depth dive into props which at the time of this writing I do not know how that turned out so I am forging ahead with an inspiration from the Swamp Thing movies I watched this past weekend (which is a phrase I do not believe gets uttered very often). I mean I am nothing if not festive and in particular this month I get to be cinematically festive for my favourite Genre, so this is a win, win super win as far as I am concerned.

One of the things I liked best about the Swamp Thing movies was the creature design for the title character. When you are looking at horror movies, particularly creature features, if it is a great movie, or a movie that you love, then chances are it has a really cool iconic creature/monster. It looks super cool, maybe has some badass abilities, the type of monsters that make you hide your eyes, gasp or just plain go “Heck Yeah!”. And creating a monster is not as simple as a rubber suit. Great monsters also highlight the great works of the crew, it can take impeccable hair, make-up, special effects, sound is real important too. Great movie monsters are the total package, and when everything is up on screen it just hits, especially with older monsters that are still around and still iconic today. The only downside to a great iconic movie monster is it builds up an expectation and then becomes a double edged sword. Some characters are so strongly tied to their actors fans cannot see anyone else playing the role and would boycott attempts to recast/reimagine the character. Although it should be mentioned that it is possible to pull that switcheroo, it just has to be done with the utmost of respect and a lot of luck mixed in to win over some fans.

Either way a great monster is a great monster and today I want to celebrate that with the simple prompt of: What is your favourite movie monster? Luckily movies have given us a cornucopia (seasonal reference… nailed it) of monsters to choose from, great, not so great, fun, interesting and so on.
