Ad Space – Embrace Your Gimmick

You are now entering Ad Space, a realm of commercials, brought before us so we might examine how they work, and discuss why we both love and hate them so. So it is written …

The Pitch:
We can help you turn your business into a neverending cosplay.

Something I need to remind myself with these ads is that Canva’s job is not to give people business advice. They’re a tool for designing your webpage and managing your online presence. They’re not here to advise you on whether redesigning your business around an elaborate gimmick is a good idea – they’re simply demonstrating that, even for such a radical redesign, they provide the tools to manage it easily.

That’s all well and good, but I can’t quite silence the part of myself that wants to warn small business owners “Do not imitate the sales techniques shown in these ads”.

I mean, I’m sure there are some businesses where going all-in on these sorts of gimmicks really works for them. But for many others, it can add needless expenses, confuse people about what exactly it is you do, and trap you into playing this exaggerated role your entire life – like being one of those costumed performers at Disney World, except you can never quit because all your money tied up with it.
