Best Video Game Song Tournament of Champions: Final Results, and Thank You

Chrono CrossScars of Time97UndertaleMegalovania

Well, we have a reversal of the winners’ semi-finals result! Our ultimate champion of champions, the Avocado’s chosen best video game song of all time, is Scars of Time!

(…of course it was a 90s Square song)

Megalovania still did quite well for itself, finishing in second with a winners’ final win to be proud of. It only finished top 8 in the 13-16 tourney, falling to Last Surprise1, so it somehow did better against stronger competition. Clutch gene confirmed, Megalovania has that dog in it.

Specifically this dog

And in 3rd place we have Wily Stage 1, a very strong choice for best classic chiptune-era song if I say so myself.

I’ve been running these tournaments for almost exactly 6 years. It’s wild to think how long that is, really. This series is older than Covid.2 I’ve been an independent adult (which I’m personally defining as “I’m not in college”) for 11 years, so this tournament’s been around for longer than it hasn’t. It’s been around for my entire post-transition life. It’s been a fixture, and despite the effort of running it, despite the stress it sometimes caused, I’m going to miss it.

I would like to sincerely thank every single person who has ever participated in one of these tournaments. This was a big swing, a massive departure from how we usually do tournaments on this site. I got autistic about rules, as a game designer is wont to do, and the result was this ungainly beast. The fact that anyone at all was willing to go with me on this journey means the world to me.

I was a very different person when I started this series. I was the wrong gender, working a job I hated, in desperate search for anything to give my life flavor, to give it purpose. I’m not that, anymore, and so I naturally can’t commit to an undertaking this huge again. The void it was filling has closed; that’s what I had to come to terms with after the 21-22 tourney, and the hiatus I took after. But I don’t want to talk about this series like it was a burden, because it absolutely was not. It was the highlight of my mornings, it was the only bright spot in my day more often than I care to count.

And so, though we bid it farewell, it’s not entirely going away. Every March, I’d like to bring it back, and hold a tournament for the previous year’s crop of video game songs. (I’m going March to give people some time to get familiar with songs, especially from late in the year releases. Also March is the traditional time for silly tournaments) But until then, our work is concluded.

Thank you so much for being here
