KPop KOs the Box Office — Weekend Box Office Report for August 22nd-August 24th, 2025

Netflix is the only company on the planet to be ashamed to admit they have the number one movie at the box office.

Yes, our champion this weekend is KPop Demon Hunters: A Sing-Along Event, but don’t tell Netflix that, because they sure as fuck won’t tell you. Current estimates have the kiddie pop culture phenomenon singing to the tune of $18 million, but I can’t stress enough how those numbers aren’t coming from Netflix. Other studios, of course, release their own studio estimates for the press until actuals come in the following day. Not Netflix! They’re too important for that! They don’t want to talk about people getting up to leave their homes to consume their content! So all of those estimates come from rival sources and/or “guesstimates” from theater chains.

Is it a hot take to call this practice stupid? I certainly hope not, because this practice is stupid! Literally no one benefits from Netflix keeping such matters under wraps, but hey, what do I know? I’m just the guy who talks about this stuff for free each week. Maybe if I had more contacts in the industry this would actually make sense to me, but I somehow doubt it.

Moving on, we have Weapons, which has now surpassed the $100 million mark and will overtake Final Destination: Bloodlines before all is said and done. In fact, Weapons has a got chance of claiming back the top spot next weekend as it will be free of KPop Demon Hunters unless Netflix decides to extend its run. Labor Day is looking especially weak this year, with the only major new release being the grungy-looking black comedy Caught Stealing, but perhaps the re-release of Jaws could overperform.

As for our other newcomers this weekend…they aren’t. Honey Don’t is way too aptly titled as audiences don’t show up for it, the decently reviewed Relay is getting completely ignored, and the English dub of Ne Zha 2 is currently in 13th place. Sheesh. Wait, if Ne Zha 2 is doing so badly in America, then why am I choosing to give it the featured image this week? Out of spite for Netflix, of course. Sometimes being petty is the noble thing to do.
