Walter Dean Myers Night Thread

Born August 12, 1937, Walter Dean Myers was an author of Young Adult and Children’s Literature. Per Wikipedia, he wrote more than 100 books over the course of about 45 years.

Myers received the Coretta Scott King award for African-American authors five times. He also won the Margaret Edwards award for “significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature” in 1994. His notable books include Hoops (1983) and Fallen Angels (1988).

He won the first-ever Michael L. Printz award for Young Adult Literature in 2000 for his book Monster. The book Monster is about a 16-year-old African-American boy named Steve who is on trial for murder. Publisher’s description: “Steve, an amateur filmmaker, decides to transcribe his trial into a script, just like in the movies. He writes it all down, scene by scene, the story of how his whole life was turned around in an instant. But despite his efforts, reality is blurred and his vision obscured until he can no longer tell who he is or what is the truth.”

Walter Dean Myers died in 2014 after a brief illness. He was 76.
