The 7/31 Day Thread is the only one who remembers “The Moxy Pirate Show”

Has there ever been a bit of pop culture ephemera that you’re certain that you are the only person who remembers it?

Around thirty years ago, my family visited my grandparents for a week-long vacation. My grandparents had cable with all the channels, which was amazing to my brother and me; our family only had cable with some of the channels. I distinctly remember watching tv while my parents and grandparents talked and stumbled onto two specific shows. One was a strange show with puppets that talked over a movie in which a caveman “built” a completely modern hangglider to storm a castle. (I would later learn that show was Mystery Science Theater 3000 and the episode was entitled “Cave Dwellers.”) The other show was much less famous and may be completely forgotten.

The Moxy Show aka The Moxy Pirate Show aka The Moxy & Flea Show was Cartoon Network’s first attempt at original programming. It featured a 3D-animated cartoon dog (voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait) who was a “janitor” at Cartoon Network and would “interrupt” the feed to host a show. Pretty much, Moxy just stood around and did interstitial bits between cartoon shorts.

The gimmick was that Moxy was supposedly animated “live” (which is a real strain on the animators’ wrists, or so I’ve been told). The Moxy character was a 3D puppet controlled by someone in a motion capture suit. Even for the early 90s, the effect was exceptionally janky. Moxy mostly stood in place or walked awkwardly across the set.

Moxy was later joined by a wisecracking sidekick named “Flea,” who was not the famous bass player but instead voiced by Penn Jillette and later Chris Rock. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

The Moxy Pirate Show was not beloved. Attempts to change the name and the premise didn’t bring viewers in. The show never made it onto VHS or DVD or anywhere else, and it is now considered lost media.
