A scene from the comic "Bone." The main character Fone Bone is running away from two giant rat creatures that are chasing him. In the first panel, he stops suddenly at the edge of a river flowing over a cliff. In the second panel, Fone jumps down to a small branch sticking from the cliffside. In the third panel, the rat creatures look down at Fone perched on his little branch. Fone smiles and says, "Those Rat Creatures would have to be pretty stupid to follow me on to this frail, little branch!" In the fourth panel, the two rat creatures are on the end of the branch that is bending under the weight. A furious Fone yells at them, "Stupid, stupid Rat Creatures!!"

Comic Book Conversations: Black and white

Black and white is the simplest way to make a comic. A line and paper. Substance and emptiness. But there so much nuance that can happen between those two extremes. And real artists can find new dimensions and textures and depth. Most manga is black and white but in the US it was its own genre and era for a while.
