Earlier this year, I invited folks to take a Second Look at a piece of media or pop culture and see if their opinions had changed. And we had some truly fantastic essays! From Wes Anderson films to The Hobbit to Batman games to the Star Wars sequels, we had a chance to discuss how pieces of media have changed and how our tastes have changed over the years as well.
As we head into the second half of the year, I wanted to invite more sign-ups for Second Look, with a few tweaks to the rules. One, we’re gonna try switching days: Posts will go live on Tuesdays at 12:30 Eastern time. Mondays are a busy day, and I think Tuesdays are a little less crowded. Also, whereas before I asked that you avoid revisiting something you’ve seen in the past 5 years, I’m going to remove that limitation. Ultimately, I just ask that you pick a piece of media/pop culture where you think your opinion may have changed or you might have a perspective you didn’t before. Maybe it’s a movie you loved in theaters, but now that it’s out on disc/streaming, you’re curious if the hype holds up.
And a reminder, this doesn’t have to be only the second time you’ve engaged with something. It can be a favorite series from childhood you watched countless times, a book you used to reread every year, or what have you. The more important piece I’m interested in with this series is how your perspective on the media might have changed, and what did or didn’t resonate with you on revisit compared to what did or didn’t in the past.
As for posting a piece, just make sure you’ve requested to be a publisher, and follow the posting walkthrough. Set your review in the appropriate category, and use the tag Second Look as well as the following depending on what you’ve selected (full disclosure: I adapted this list from Late to the Party):
