Tommy Oliver is a Teenager With Attitude. He was the first Green Power Ranger,1 selected by the evil space witch2 Rita Repulsa, who saw his skill at martial arts rivalling the Red Ranger Jason and chose him as her evil Power Ranger, kept enslaved by an evil spell powered by the Sword of Darkness.3 Under her command, Tommy nearly defeats the Power Rangers. He even gets to grow huge this one time.

Ultimately though, Jason manages to destroy the Sword of Darkness and free Tommy from Rita’s evil control. Tommy then befriends the Rangers, becoming their strongest ally in the battle against Rita Repulsa. However, Tommy remains haunted by Rita’s control over him, with her voice in his head playing on his self-doubt and sabotaging his relationship with the other Rangers.

In the end though, Tommy releases his self doubt and learns to trust his teammates, giving up his own powers to empower the team when they lose their powers during the fight with the evil Lord Drakkon.

Tommy goes on to become such a thorn in Rita’s side, as well as a symbol of her failure, that Rita decides to remove him from the picture for good. Using a magical green candle, she casts a spell that begins draining his power – when the candle burns out, so will the Green Ranger powers. She draws Tommy into a trap where he is forced to use up the last of his powers in battle so that she can finally destroy4 him, but he’s saved at the last minute by Jason, although he couldn’t stop the candle from draining his powers. He’s forced to instead transfer the remnants of his powers to Jason in order to prevent them from becoming lost forever at the completion of the spell of the green candle. And so, the Green Ranger was never seen again, ever. Except for this one time when Zordon infuses Tommy with his life energy to temporarily restore his powers.5 And this other time when the Wizard of Deception stole a lock of Tommy’s hair to create an evil Green Ranger clone.6 And this other time in a weird fever dream.7
You know what, never mind, just have a good Day Thread. And until next time…
