Weekly Japanese Pop Culture Thread (April 2, 2025)

Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! It’s snowing where I live, but I’m very much ready for Spring. I want to see flowers! And green grass! But it’s a little early for that, I suppose. In the meantime, I have things like CDTV’s recent “Spring Song Countdown” special to make me feel a little springy. I first saw CDTV (Count Down TV) last summer while I was in Japan, and when I got home I started watching it, partly to help with my listening comprehension. CDTV is a weekly late-night music countdown show that features the top 100 (or 50 depending on the feature) songs based on rankings. Sometimes they do special themes like this Spring Song list, other times it’s the monthly rankings. They also have several live performances, which was what drew me to it initially. It’s become one of my favorite things to watch, as I get to hear new music, and celebrate when my favorites do well on the charts.). So…wondering what the #1 Spring Song was from the last 32 years? *drum roll*

It’s “Sakurazaka”「桜坂」 by Masaharu Fukuyama (福山雅治) ! *round of applause* Very nice!

And, as always…

What have you been watching/reading/playing/eating/listening to lately?

Happy Wednesday! 🌸
