1973’s Jesus Christ Superstar is one of my go-to examples for a film that has only gotten better with age. When it first came out, people were like “Oh boy, what are all these hippies doing singing and dancing in the desert?” But now the film’s aesthetics situate it as a product of its time in the best possible way, with the story’s themes reflecting a growing disillusionment with the hippie movement of the 1960s as time marched on into the next decade (and beyond).
Looking back now at that question of what all those hippies were doing singing and dancing in the desert, the answer is clearly: “Putting on one heck of a show, that’s what.”
Anyhoo, I highly suggest watching the whole thing. Meanwhile, here’s the opening number “Heaven on their Minds,” featuring Carl Anderson as Judas. In a pink V-neck bell-bottomed suit. In the desert. And it’s perfect.
