Welp, that was ugly.
Our number one movie–barely–is Novocaine, but that’s really the only good thing we can say here, as it opened to only $8.7 million. Even worse, that number includes sneak previews from last weekend! I have no idea what went wrong, as I genuinely thought this had potential to be a breakout hit. It had a hilarious trailer and great reviews. Did audiences confuse this with last month’s Love Hurts (in which the fights were great, but holy shit, Ariana DeBose was awful in that thing) and stay home for that reason? Do people not trust Jack Quaid to play a hero anymore? I don’t get it.
At number two–and currently “tied” with Mickey 17–is Black Bag, the latest from Steven Soderbergh. Like Novocaine, this one got terrific critical reception, and $7.5 million is an average opening for Focus Features. The bad news is Black Bag is very expensive for Focus Features at a reported $50 million budget. I don’t know how that happened for a movie that is essentially Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett talking quietly for 90 minutes, but hey, I’m not a producer. Both Black Bag and Novocaine got heavy promotion on ESPN and other sports channels, yet they’re performing as though they had no push at all .
And speaking of no promotional push, this weekend also brings us the long-awaited release of The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which after Warner Bros. abandoned it had to be “saved” by independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment (yes, that’s their name!), and since they are such a small company, $3 million was sadly the best this one could hope for. Marketing was non-existent. Warner Bros., for whatever reason, has no clue how to handle the Looney Tunes, but at least those who are going to this film are having a good time.
Elsewhere, Jesus is back at the movies with The Last Supper, and how the hell is this film nearly two hours long? It managed to make nearly $3 million despite most people having no clue it even existed. Faring far worse is A24’s Opus, a horror film which may or may not be a comedy in which John Malkovich gets to do his best possible impression of John Malkovich. It made only $1 million and couldn’t even reach the top ten. What an awful weekend! Hopefully Snow White of all things will at least be enough to ensure theaters aren’t completely empty next week.
