American Dad! Season 21, Episode 20, “Silicon Steve”

In which Steve, Klaus and Lewis get Zuckerberged, with singing along the way

American Dad! has always had smatterings of song and dance sprinkled in along the way (if you haven’t listened to the released album I suggest you do that). But this episode I would argue is the closest it’s gotten to a “musical” episode even if it’s not fully there. I counted four rap songs along the way sung by the most musically inclined Smith, Steve, along with Klaus and Lewis, the trio that lead the way through this episode.

Steve is sitting around at the start of summer vacation bored because all of his friends are away. Klaus and Lewis are around to try to get him into things. Steve brings up he wants to develop an app. He notes how kids can hear two to three registers higher which will keep adults off the app. Toshi’s father, Hideki, he of the famous gut, bursts in and initially declares the app to be a dumb idea.

However, the trio start developing the app and it soon takes off so much so that Hideki decides to reengage and buy in as an investor. Hideki of course betrays the guys and takes over the company, first getting ads placed in the app and then just Zuckerberging them right out. The app develops out of control, with ads all over the place and basically helping childhood obesity explode. He does eventually acknowledge Steve and tells him that Toshi will spend next summer with him instead of going to SAT camp.

Over in the B-plot the family’s cable gets cancelled and they are start to do dumb stuff, except for Francine who already anticipates it’s going to be dumb. And you know what? She was right. An extremely forgettable B-plot that does nothing but takes us away from the great A-plot.

Stray Observations

  • Akiko is actually acknowledged as still existing even though she hasn’t shown up in ages.
  • “Hey I’m kayaking down here!”

Final Thoughts: A fun episode with a fun dynamic from the Steve/Lewis/Klaus trio along with some banger rap interludes. The B-plot was nothing to write home about but that’s small potatoes.
