The Peter Cottontail Day Thread Wants to Give You Some Green George Washington Eggs

Here Comes Peter Cottontail is the Holiday Inn of Rankin/Bass outings, managing to fit several special occasions into one hour thanks to a time travel story that sends its titular bunny on a quest to save Easter. To do this, he must win a contest to deliver the most eggs, but alas, he sleeps through the big day, losing the contest to the villainous Irontail, and now he’s desperately attempting to do the job on other holidays to make up for it.

After Irontail turns all of the eggs green using evil magic, no one wants them anymore. Even a sobbing Donna, that girl bunny from earlier, returns hers, because apparently free eggs have a satisfaction guarantee.

So poor Peter, who can’t change the color of the eggs again now thanks to Irontail’s spell (at least I think that’s the case), goes to the next holiday: George Washington’s Birthday. And ironically, Here Comes Peter Cottontail aired in 1971, which was the year it got rebranded as President’s Day and moved to the third Monday in February, thus instantly dating the special. Infuriatingly, the Blu-ray removes this scene entirely presumably for that reason, but then again, that disc cuts nearly ten minutes from the thing, so why the fuck does that release even exist?

Anyway, Peter dresses up as George Washington and claims the eggs are green in honor of “when he cut down the lime tree.” He gets rejected because he’s lying, but hey, does that really excuse turning down an egg these days? Also, I haven’t addressed this up until now, but apparently a talking bunny going to your front door is just a regular occurrence in this universe.

Have a great day, y’all!
