The Avocado Weekly Movie Thread (01/28)

It may not seem like it, but watching a movie is an event. It may be a small event, but an event nonetheless. You are investing precious time to be entertained in some way shape or form and you are probably expecting some return on that investment. It could also be looked at as a low key form of gambling hoping to get that big reward on the gamble that you might really enjoy something or in the even more rare instance become figuratively richer for the experience.

But what if you double that experience. What if there is twice the entertainment out there just waiting for someone to add a dash of action to the comedy or drama? What if movies themselves were a Double team to have Double Impact? What if putting two movies together can maximize synergy or some other silly corporate exec-u-speak? recognize this could be double edged sword creating Double Jeopardy due to the time investment involved, but just because you are Seeing Double does not mean you need to do a Double Take. Sometimes you need to go Double or Nothing and risk getting Double Crossed by multiple bad movies, especially ones that Double Drag On… Okay, I have had my fun… Sometimes watching two movies back to back can really enhance the experience. I mean it was a big enough thing at one point that they dedicated an entire Rocky Horror Picture Show song to it (and arguably the best one at that).

Going to a double feature in theatres could be anything from a curated experience, to two random movies mashed together in order to increase box office results (I assume, I mean otherwise I am not sure why I went to see a double feature of Forest Gump and Little Giants in 1994). Perhaps it is something promotional pairing an old entry in a franchise to a new one like the time I saw Mad Max: Fury Road and The Road Warrior together (and was totally cheated on a prize no less), or at the very least movies that share the same spirit. Maybe local theatre geeks have gotten together and put out something special for Halloween, Christmas, St. Swithin’s Day or some other similar holiday. Local drive-ins by me regularly have double features and on special occasions even more (my record is a quintuple feature, and yes they played the “let’s all go to the lobby” song and animation between every film) Look the reason for the double feature is less important than the experience itself, the event if you will.

With all that said (and shortening this post a bit due to pneumonia related awfulness) this week’s prompt is fairly simple if you should choose to accept: Talk about a double feature experience. For my part I actually had a tough time with this one as I have seen in double features in the double digits (I am ballparking close to 50, but double the movies double the fun!), but at the end of the day I have to go with a local movie geek group (also they have a wicked cool name calling themselves The Thrillema) that held a special double feature for Halloween: Trick R’ Treat and Evil Dead 2. Trick R Treat was special as I had not seen it at this point and quite enjoyed it with a like-minded audience. Evil Dead 2 was special as at least half of the 100ish seats had never seen it and I got to see a lot of people experience Evil Dead 2 the first time… with a like-minded audience. Next Week: Quintuple features (not really).
