Moviegoers Go Wild — Weekend Box Office Report for September 27th-September 29th 2024

DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot surpassed tracking by nearly $15 million, bringing home $35 million for the weekend. That includes Thursday showings (which began at 2:00; seriously, these don’t count as opening night screenings anymore) and sneak peeks done last week, but regardless, this is a fantastic take for an animated movie in September. Critics were over the moon for the latest from director Chris Sanders, whose resume includes Lilo and Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon, and audiences are in love too with an ‘A’ CinemaScore.

Sadly, alas, that love just isn’t extending out to Transformers One, which isn’t showing legs despite strong reviews and an enthusiastic response from fans. Worth noting that with $38 million in the bot bank, it’s made less in ten days than it was expected to make in its opening weekend. Ugh. For Paramount, this is a huge blow. They made a great movie here that was intended to be the start of a trilogy, and now it looks like those plans have been crushed.

And speaking of crushed, I’d say that’s what happened to Megalopolis, but really, no one was ever thinking this film wouldn’t tank. Coppola self-financed this one as a passion project. Haters gonna hate, but he doesn’t care as he never intended for this to make money. For Lionsgate, they’re only the distributor here, and while most people will view this as yet another bomb to them, they’re reportedly not gonna lose any money from this. That being said, the studio doesn’t have sunny days in its future anytime soon. Next week brings the arrival of White Bird, and you’d be forgiven for not even knowing that as there has been virtually no marketing as of late for this one. Even though it’s a follow-up to 2017’s sleeper hit Wonder, it is also a holocaust drama targeted at families. That’s a tough sell.

Elsewhere, the Bollywood actioner Devara Part One snuck into the top five, while Speak No Evil is continuing to have a strong enough hold. The same can’t be said for Never Say Never, which shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who has seen the film. It’s actually a miracle it’s still in the top ten. Finally, My Old Ass expanded and no one showed up.

Next week the box office should get a big boost from Joker 2. Maybe. The problem is I keep hearing this much-anticipated sequel has a terrible ending, so it could end up having poor legs. We’ll see what happens.
