Welcome to the weekend music thread, a thread that will still probably get renamed to something else. Something stupid. I’m adding a little intro because the green divider looks bad as the first part of this page.
New(-ish) Music
Illuminati Hotties – POWER: Typically Illuminati Hotties is a chaotic gremlin of a band. One that can hop from tones and moods so easily, from extreme silly punk jingles to sweet alt-country or melancholy post-rock and then back again. Tenderpunk as she calls it. POWER, weirdly, is just one mode and it’s mostly taken the tender half of the equation and run with it. The songs are rocking, but gently so. It’s a little disappointing for an album that leads off with the promise that she “can’t be still” that much of the album finds her in the same place. It’s not bad by any means, the album is mostly fine, but there’s not much memorable about it. Except the song ‘Didn’t’ which is both pretty fun and unfortunately reminds me of Weezer’s ‘Beverly Hills’.
Charly Bliss – Forever: The second album from the band further chasing the capital P pop-rock they began playing on their last album. I think the results here are a lot stronger and fun this time around. ‘Calling You Out’ is the perfect, anthemic rock song they’ve always pretended to be playing in their live shows and is a definite highlight of the album. I was skeptical of this middle ground they’re in at first, somewhere between a rock band and a synth-pop act, but when it works it really works for me here. ‘Last First Kiss’, the closer, may as well be an audition for a job writing for Carly Rae Jepsen with it’s soaring, sugary chorus and simple steady synth bass. It’s been a surprisingly fun time spent with this album.
Old(-er) Music
10 years ago this week was the surprise return of Death From Above 1979 with their second album The Physical World. I think this album is great, and honestly not that far off from their debut. A bit of the most straight-forward dance-punk is gone, now much more of just a very interesting and noisy rock band. So while it’s missing something as bluntly fun and grooving as ‘Sexy Results’ it does have instead the incredibly fun ‘Right On, Frankenstein’ which everyone should at least know (mostly because I love the phrasing of it-its fun to say).
Some Live Videos
Here’s a band I don’t know, LEMON BOY on wkexp – I’m giving this a list and a listen because I forgot to find something else, and, they’ve got a song called ‘Piss Baby’
