Disney and Pixar are still feeling it.
Our number one movie–again–is Inside Out 2. The well-liked sequel just keeps chugging along, and brought $57 million into the memory bank (seriously, why isn’t that a joke in the film?). That brings its total to a frankly insane $469 million. By this time next week, it will surpass Frozen II and Finding Dory on the all-time animated domestic chart. Will it be able top The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Incredibles 2 after that? That really depends on the Minions, who should give Riley’s emotions a taste of reality when Despicable Me 4 opens on Wednesday, as those films just print money. Regardless, Inside Out 2 is a massive financial triumph that no one saw coming (even if I have no idea how on earth it cost $200 million to make). Worldwide, it has already crossed the $1 billion mark, making it the first 2024 outing to do so, and also the fastest ever for an animated feature to pass that milestone.
Meanwhile, A Quiet Place: Day One wasn’t kept silent by Pixar, as it opened to a very strong $53 million. Initially, some expected for this to actually trounce Inside Out 2, but in the end, it fell to second place after being number one on “Friday” (note that includes Thursday previews). Considering we are talking about a prequel to a horror franchise with no major cast members from the first two entries involved, this has to be considered a massive success. Keep in mind, this is currently the only PG-13 thrill ride in theaters, and there won’t be another one until Twisters comes out in mid-July. That just speaks to how starved the marketplace is for content this summer.
Our other major newcomer, unfortunately, came up shorter than many were hoping. Kevin Costner’s passion project Horizon: An American Saga made around $11 million this weekend, which given the genre is kind of expected. Darn shame since I thought this one looked pretty great, but there are so many characters in this epic that audiences didn’t really have a plot to latch onto with the marketing. The prequel to Costner’s Waterworld which takes place more than 100 years before the planet flooded is actually the first of four intended chapters, but so far only the second one (due in August) has been completed. Costner is financing these out of his own pocket, so really, good for him. I hope he gets to finish what he started.
Alongside smaller releases, we have India’s Kalki 2898 AD, reportedly the country’s most expensive film ever made. The action extravaganza managed to squeeze its way into the top five with $5.4 million, but it’s worth noting this is a premium release, meaning all tickets for it cost extra. Still, that’s impressive for a three-hour foreign film with subtitles. Also from India, we have Jatt and Juliet 3, which made it into the top ten, so hey, it’s a good time for Bollywood. Finally, the extremely weird-looking Kinds of Kindness landed in tenth place despite only playing on about 400 screens.
Sadly, last weekend’s The Bikeriders isn’t displaying any form of legs, with its older audience showing up for Horizon instead. It currently has a total of just $16 million. So much for this becoming a sleeper hit, but hey, it’s already out-grossed every other Focus Features film so far this year, so that’s something.
