The third and final late-80s Lego Space faction on the scene were the Space Police, whose first incarnation ran entirely in the year 1989.

In design terms, the Space Police were surprisingly villain-coded: a limited palette of black and blue fuselages, transparent red windscreens and highlights, and stark black and white costumes with red faceplates (sartorially speaking, they appear to be a subfaction of the Futurons, which explains why all their prisoners wear Blacktron garb). Maybe Lego was trying to tell us even then that A(S)CAB.

Major gimmicks of Space Police included light bricks and interchangeable prison pods which appeared in multiple sets. It would later get rebooted twice under the same name, in 1992 and again in 2009 – look for those themes in the weeks to come.
