Bad Boys: Ride or Die Slaps at Box Office — Box Office Report for June 7th-June 9th 2024

Hey gang. Sorry for being late with this. I have had, as they say, a day.

Our number one movie is Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and thankfully, we finally have a summer blockbuster that is truly performing like, well, a blockbuster. Some people, including myself, were worried that this would fall well below tracking, but these bad boys are anything but bad financially, with a great $56 million start. Yes, yes, a few online naysayers might point out that this is lower than the opening for 2020’s Bad Boys For Life, but c’mon. We’re talking about a franchise that started nearly 30 years ago (yes, really, you are that old, or that young, depending on who you are). With that in mind, this is amazing news, and it gets even better when you consider that Ride or Die cost a reported $90 million to produce, which weirdly enough is kind of a mid-range budget these days (I’m also guessing Will Smith was willing to take a smaller paycheck than usual this time, for, um, reasons).

But the good news doesn’t end there. The Garfield Movie continues to show some of the strongest legs of the year. It maintained its second place position and has a nice $69 million (you’ll forgive me for rounding up there) in the Garf bank. Similarly, IF is also doing well, hanging in there in third place with a current tally of $93 million. Yes, both movies will get brought down a significant peg once Inside Out 2 dominates the family market next weekend, but IF is still going to cross the $100 million mark before its done, while The Garfield Movie will surpass the $75 million gross of 2004’s Garfield: The Movie with ease.

Unfortunately, in the immortal words of the Griffin from Quest for Camelot, “here is where we enter a grey area.” It would seem that no one is bothering to watch The Watchers, as it could only cough up $7 million. Yikes. No surprise, critics absolutely loathed this one (the best review I could find was from ComingSoon, and they gave it a 6 out of 10), and audiences weren’t much kinder with a “C-” CinemaScore (and yet, I still kind of want to see it, probably because I’m a gluten for punishment). The bright spot is this didn’t cost nearly as much as other recent duds from Warner Bros., including last year’s The Color Purple (which lost the studio roughly $40 million) and the current Furiosa. Sadly, things only got worse for the Fury Road prequel, as it plunged to sixth place with a take of just $4 million. Look, I get no pleasure in reporting when a good movie like this one bombs, but a flop is a flop is a flop. On a lighter note, two of the Lord of the Rings movies made the top ten this weekend as they enjoyed limited theatrical reissues. Cool.
