The Five Ton Rhino Day Thread

The Five Ton Rhino Day Thread (June 2, 2024)

You probably know Elie Aghnides as the creator of the faucet aerator, because who doesn’t? That little plastic doohickey which screws into your faucet to regulate pressure and prevent splashing was invented in 1943, changed the course of humanity forever, and made Mr Aghnides a fortune.

Less well known is one of his other inventions: The Rhino. This was an amphibious four-wheeled, five-ton vehicle designed to be a replacement for the tank.

The prototype was built by Marmon-Harrington in Indianapolis in 1954 and could traverse roads, deep mud, and water. Thanks to its low centre of gravity it could lean over at a 75 degree angle without toppling over.

Sadly the military rejected the idea, concerned the enormous six-foot in diameter inflatable front wheels could be pierced by gunfire. Here’s some authentic British Pathé film footage of this awesome vehicle:

Have a super day everyone, and try not to topple over.
