Sam and Twitch Case Files #1
Writers – Todd McFarlane and Jon Goff
Artist – Szymon Kudranski
Spawn’s Universe is starting to expand once more after the milestone 350th issue of Spawn and Detectives Sam and Twitch are back after a long hiatus!
I picked this issue up at Eide’s anniversary sale for my friend Elizabeth and I’m hoping she gets a kick out of it.
The one spoiler I have to get out of the way early is that Spawn doesn’t show up at all during the course of this issue. Frankly, I’m okay with that. I hope you will stay and read the rest of this review. Still here? Good!
Sam and Twitch are called into their Chief’s office for a meeting. It seems that Sam used excessive force on an informant and the man’s mother has filed a complaint that has reached all the way up to City Hall. Sam is suspended for one month and leaves the meeting in a huff. Twitch gets up to leave and his boss informs him that he too is also suspended for a month, since he has lost control of his partner’s behavior. Twitch tells Sam that they he is tired of his explosive and reckless outbursts, which doesn’t sit well with Sam. The issue ends with a phone call to Twitch from an old police academy compatriot named Jim Tressel. He could use Twitch’s know-how on a case he is currently working on.
Before I continue, yes – the police officer that calls Twitch shares the same name with the former Ohio State Football coach. Someone on the creative team must be a Buckeye fan. I’m sure a future villain will look like Bo Schembechler or Jim Harbaugh.
This art in this book is gorgeous and that’s all thanks to the pencils of Szymon Kudranski. My favorite series of pages are at the very end when we see what Tressel finds, which leads him to call Twitch. The issue is a nice re-introduction to Sam and Twitch and it seems pretty mundane and paint-by-numbers until the very end. The final pages will grab you and make you want to see what happens next issue.
If you are a fan of true crime documentaries and police procedurals, this is the book for you. It has Gotham Central vibes and I’m sure Spawn’s Universe will start to intrude into the real world in ways we haven’t seen yet. This series is Rated M for Mature for language and blood, gore, and violence. Reader Discretion is Advised!
As of this writing (Sunday April 14th), the first issue is not available on Hoopla but it will be if you can wait a bit longer for it to hit the app. If you want to pick up a copy at your local comic shop, the cover price is still only $2.99!
Can Sam and Twitch repair their personal and professional relationship? Will Twitch take the case and will he loop in his friend for assistance? Can they solve the mystery before their 30-day suspension is up?
Next Issue – “The hunt for a murderer brings to light an old case our two distinguished detectives thought long closed. Could there be a missing connection?”
