Geiger #1 (2024)
Writer – Geoff Johns
Artist – Gary Frank
Eide’s Entertainment had their annual once-a-year anniversary sale to celebrate 52 years since opening their doors on March 18th, 1972. I visited the store on Saturday, April 13th to grab some last-minute items. I decided to grab a few comic books to give to my friends and Geiger #1 was one of them.
Tariq Geiger was a man dying of cancer until he was caught in a nuclear blast during the Unknown War. He wanders the post – apocalyptic wasteland “looking for any excuse to share his rage with evildoers he deems deserving.”
Geiger has been followed through the desert by a wandering knight and the two finally meet face to face. The Knight worked for the King of Vegas until he was dispatched by Geiger. The knight named Nate wants to follow in Geiger’s heroic quest to right wrongs and help those less fortunate as penance for the evil he helped perpetrate under the King’s reign. We learn that there is a person that could glow like Geiger who was cured of their radiation sickness. The two men embark on a quest to find those that helped this individual, not knowing they are being tracked and hunted by an unknown character that possesses electric powers.
Geiger, Redcoat, and Rook: Exodus are the first three titles kicking off the Ghost Machine imprint. All three were released in April to massive sellouts and a rush to second printings. I consider myself lucky that I was able to grab a copy of a first printing of Geiger. Newly released comic books are normally picked over after New Comic Book Day. I’ll be giving the copy I purchased to my friend Josh, who is always helpful when I visit the local post office. I have a feeling this will be right up his alley.
Many of the commentors and visitors here at the Avocado are fans of the Mad Max films and this comic would hit that sweet spot. I also think those that love and appreciate the original Incredible Hulk TV series from the 1970s would dig this title as well. Tariq Geiger has that David Banner “Lonely Man” vibe as he travels from town to town trying to find peace in a world full of chaos and madness. The main difference is that Geiger has a two headed dog named Barney that accompanies him along his journey.
WARNING – Geiger contains over the top action and a world that might not be for the weak of heart. Please handle with extreme caution! YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!
The first issue of Geiger was released on Wednesday April 3, 2024. The second issue is slated for release on Wednesday May 8, 2024. As of this writing (Saturday April 13), the first issue is not available on Hoopla. In the meantime, the first mini-series is available if you’d like to dip your toes into the water before picking up the issue online or at your local comic book shop.
Next Issue – “THE UNNAMED SAGA CONTINUES! Tariq Geiger, his two-headed wolf Barney, and their surprising newfound companion begin their quest along the radioactive roads of the former United States to find a cure for the Glowing Man’s nuclear-powered condition. But in order to obtain the information they need, Geiger’s crew must first help a local sheriff catch and kill a masked raider that’s pillaging the town. But what Geiger ultimately discovers chills him to his glowing green bones.”
