This week, it’s Dev Patel versus the world in his directoral debut, Monkey Man. Patel plays Kid, a worker at an underground fight club, who one day takes on thugs as vengeance over the death of his mother.
It’s been called in some places online as “Dev Patel becomes John Wick.” The premise, though, is nothing new. The concept —- Protagonist gets too far and snaps and reveals himself to be a secret badass —- is one that’s been around forever.

That said… Dev Patel being an action hero? That was a little unexpected, right? His film debut was as the gangly kid in Slumdog Millionaire. Dramatic roles like in Lion and classy-looking films like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel seemed to be his destiny. Or maybe he could be in adaptations of British literature like David Copperfield.

But I totally didn’t see him bulked up and in roles where he’s seeking vengeance. Guess that’s the sort of thing that happens when you’re also the director.
Bonus prompt: which actor was the most unlikely action hero?
