Hello fellow parents and caregivers of children!
There are a bunch of new parents here (raises hand) and there are plenty of veteran parents, as well as people who have experience caring or helping to care for children, like teachers, baby-sitters, aunts, and uncles. Coming together will help all of us, whether we need advice, commiseration, or just a space to let it out. Being a caregiver of small humans can be hard, but also rewarding and wonderful, so we can also share in the joys of watching little humans get to be big humans.
Suggested topic: Safety
Went to a talk at my kid’s school given by a couple of officers from the county sheriff’s department, talking about safety in the community. Most of it was pretty common sense advice. They also mentioned bringing some police cars to the school and letting the kids see the flashing lights and hear the sirens because many special ed preschoolers have sensory issues and so their first time seeing and hearing such a thing wouldn’t be in the middle of an emergency.
They also talked about maybe getting kids (or older adults with dementia/alzheimer’s) a smart watch or similar with a GPS on it in case they get lost. Also the county and some of the towns offer a free GPS tracking bracelet through something called Project Lifesaver, though in that case only the police are tracking it.
What sort of safety worries do you have, and what advice do you have for easing these fears?
