The Wednesday Politics Thread Makes Use of Its Wired Subscription

Happy Valentine’s Day to the PT. Wishing you love and joy today.

I recently resubscribed to Wired, a publication which I’ve often said is worth the $5 they typically put an annual subscription on sale for. Although I quickly remembered why I stopped subscribing: They make it incredibly hard to unsubscribe (I assume this is a deliberate choice). But that’s a problem for 2025 Cordy.

In the meantime, I figure I’ll share some of the headlines. Wired is pretty limited with how many free articles you can read, and I do not see a gift article option, so pick what’s of interest! Maybe you want to read about government surveillance, so try this article backdoor conversations in Congress to limit the ability of government to surveil individuals. This coalition is trying to achieve success where it hasn’t been found before. This isn’t an issue that breaks cleanly along partisan lines, so if you are someone who calls your Representative, consider reaching out and making your voice heard.

Or if you want to hear about some AI news, OpenAI is rolling out a new feature called ChatGPT called Memory. As you might imagine based on its name, Memory is a feature designed to remember you and tailor its responses based on what it’s learned about you in past conversations. By default, users will be opted in, although OpenAI promises it will automatically forget sensitive information you may reveal to it… And they are not quite sure whether to store information such as the ethnicity of the user. As you can imagine, this creates all sorts of privacy risks.

Perhaps video games and issues surrounding access to video games are in your wheelhouse. In that case, this article the removal of the game Spec Ops from online marketplaces might tickle your fancy. While it may not seem like such a big deal, the article speaks to the challenges and importance of game preservation, which still lags behind where it ought to be.

Or perhaps you might enjoy some six word sci-fi stories

Be kind and thoughtful today. Cheers.
