Hello! Welcome to COTL, a discussion place for BIPOC. Posted the first 3 Wednesdays of the month
Thread Rules
- We ask that only those who identify as people of color participate in this discussion. White Avocados, while valued members of this community, should remain in ‘lurk’ mode.
- Shaming and hateful speech are unacceptable.
- Please keep potentially traumatic content safely behind spoiler tags.
- Nobody on this thread is more or less a person of color than anyone else. (We will not set clearly delineated boundaries on who qualifies as a ‘person of color.’ As a starting point, this thread uses the definition of ‘non-European heritage of sufficient prominence to affect one’s navigation of a society built on white normativity.’ However, we recognize that there are identities which skirt either side of the divide. If people feel that they meaningfully experience the identity of being a person of color, then they are welcome to participate.)
It’s Black History Month in the United States & I want to give a shout out to Headphone Princess for her pinned thread (that’s in its fourth year): celebrating Black music, images & videos. https://the-avocado.org/2024/02/01/black-sound-and-image-24/
I originally intended to use a prompt about Influential BIPOC media/Seminal BIPOC TV shows over the years,1 for this first thread of Black History Month, but with the passing away of Carl Weathers (on the first of February), I thought it made sense to acknowledge someone who definitely influenced media & culture (hence the header image). His Apollo Creed was so impactful they made a whole nother trilogy off of his characterisation & name alone! He may not have gotten as much opportunities as he should have (given his sheer star power), but baby he made one hell of a stew! R.I.P you absolute legend.

PROMPT: Sound off on your favourite Carl Weather moments/films, or other influential Black performers from over the years you’d like to talk about.

Feel free to go off prompt & chat about anything else that springs to mind.
