This week sees the release of the long awaited Five Night at Freddy’s film. After some off-brand attempts, one with Nic Cage and one with The Banana Splits, an official adaptation is finally out. I don’t expect much, but branded content like Super Mario Brothers and Barbie have been massive hits this year. So who knows?

Unlike those other Freddy clones, the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is rated PG-13.

PG-13 horror movie is often thrown around as a pejorative among horror fans. True horror has to be rated R, with all the blood and guts and terror associated with it. There have been good PG-13 horror films. James Wan, for example, has a fair amount of success with the PG-13 Insidious franchise.

Gore Verbinski, meanwhile, directed one of the most enduring horror films with 2002’s The Ring. And as bloody as I remember it being, Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell was apparently PG-13 as well.

That’s the thing about horror. It doesn’t have to be bloody. You just have to establish a mood.

Today’s bonus prompt: what is the most effective PG-13 horror film?
