The Politics Thread Looks Back

As mentioned in our debut thread last week, one of the things I enjoy about the PT thread is that each day has its own personality and the weekends provide for some solid education. With the Tuesday PT thread, I’m looking to do it more as a bit of a look back in time each week because, well, the news moves hard and fast and sometimes what we post in the morning isn’t even a blip by the time the afternoon or evening crowd comes on. And it’s important to remember parts of the past as they echo and shape the future.

3102 BC Epoch (origin) of the Kali Yuga

A few thousand years later in 1332, Amda Seyon I, Emperor of Ethiopia begins his campaigns in the southern Muslim provinces.

Culturally speaking, 1735 was big as the 1st opera performed in America, “Flora”, in Charleston, South Carolina

Proving to be quite the radical, Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II bans children under 8 from labor back in 1787.

And in 1834, the first US labor newspaper, “The Man”, was published in NYC

Amid primary fever, we go back to 1856 when the American Party (Know-Nothings) convened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to nominate its first Presidential candidate, former President Millard Fillmore.

And just a few years in 1861, the field got more crowded when Confederate President Jefferson Davis was inaugurated at Montgomery, Alabama

Setting off over a century of arguments in 1885, Mark Twain publishes the “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” in the US

US President Richard Nixon launches the “Nixon doctrine” back in 1970.

Tying into our recent troubles, this day in 2014 the Ukrainian Revolution of 2014 begins as protesters, riot police and unknown shooters take part in violent events in the capital, Kiev, culminating after five days in the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych.

We got birthdays, too! All the way back to 259 BC with Qin Shi Huang, Founder of the Qin dynasty and 1st emperor of a unified China! Today is also Bloody Mary’s birthday back in 1516 and Jacques Cassini from 1677. 1925 saw the actor George Kennedy born while 1927 had Luis Arroyo arrive. 1931 brought Toni Morrison into the world while just two years later we got Yoko Ono. 1950 and 1954 gave us Cybil Shepherd and John Travolta respectively and 1968 brought forth Molly Ringwald.

Be excellent to each other and remember that the McSquirrell rule is always in effect! And if it gets problematic out there, grab ahold of a mod at avocadomods@gmail.com.
