Jeopardy! recap for Mon., May 6 – With James taking a well-deserved two-week break, let’s all sit back, relax and enjoy the 2019 Teachers Tournament, starting with these contestants:
– Julia, 10th grade chemistry from Texas, gets set on fire in class;
– Joe, middle school special education from Washington state, began his teaching career in Thailand; and
– Mariah, 12th grade English language arts from Pennsylvania, integrates wassail into her teaching.
Joe was cruising at $20,000 after getting DD3, then went a bit in reverse as Julia ran the “it” category. Going into FJ it was Joe at $16,000, Julia with $10,200 and Mariah at $2,400.
DD1, $800 – CLASSIC NOVELS – This Tolstoy title lady has a young son named Sergei (Joe won $1,200 on a true DD.)
DD2, $1,600 – THE PLANETS – Some have more than 60, but these 2 planets have no known moons (Joe won $3,000 from his score of $10,600.)
DD3, $1,200 – ARCHAEOLOGY – In 2018 it was announced that the world’s oldest intact shipwreck was found off the coast of Bulgaria, at the bottom of this sea (Joe won $5,200 from his score of $14,800.)
FJ – POETS – A poem by him includes, “It was grassy and wanted wear;/ though…the passing there/has worn them really about the same”
Everyone was correct on FJ, with Joe adding $4,401 to win with $20,401. Julia picked up $5,000 and is in great shape for a wild card at $15,200, while Julia will need luck to get in after betting $2,395 to finish at $4,795.
Strategy corner: The best percentage play for Joe would have been to bet $0 on FJ, which would have given the win if Julia missed or didn’t bet enough to pass him. Also, even if Julia did defeat him, at $16,000 Joe would have been almost certain to advance as a wild card.
That’s before our time: The players didn’t recognize “Bye Bye Love” musical duo the Everly Brothers and didn’t know Fred Grandy was a regular on “The Love Boat”.
Missing the layup: For a clue about the five and dime store entrepreneur, after Julie was incorrect with “Woolsworth”, her opponents didn’t jump in with “Woolworth”.
This day in Trebekistan: Alex was joined by his new co-host and tournament sponsor Vanna…er, I mean Alexa, who did nothing other than read the first round categories.
Correct Qs:
DD1 – Who is Anna Karenina?
DD2 – What are Mercury and Venus?
DD3 – What is the Black Sea?
FJ – Who was Frost?
