The Avocado Weekly Movie Thread (08/12)

Tomorrow is Wednesday… known more commonly as the day after the Weekly Movie Thread. But more importantly as of tomorrow I will have been running this thread for one full year! When I started doing this I wasn’t sure how long I would last before running out of discussion prompt ideas (turns out it was like 5ish months, 52 weeks in a year means coming up with 52 prompts a year) and when that would inevitably happen, how long could my cheat codes last me? Well it turns out the answer to that question is 53, as I have a prompt planned for next week and none currently set for after that. Which may seem like I am out, but do not worry as I often get inspiration as I go (this is also how I traditionally buy Christmas gifts for people, and I nail that like 90% of the time), so while I may currently be out of ideas, this time next week I will probably have 3-4 being set up, so not to worry.

I enjoy writing these as one of my life’s creative outlets as well as putting up the odd terrible dad joke (ok, uncommon) for readers to groan at, but what I really love about this thread is the discussion. In the past year it has been a super positive discussion about movies we really enjoy and love, and I haven’t seen any negativity expressed towards what people like. In this phase of my life this kind of positive conversation is something I really look for. Yes there are things I do not like, but that is not where I want to focus my attention, so this thread gels with me really well. I also find it super helpful the range of movies we discuss here. We get the big budget mainstream stuff, but also we get mentions and recommendations on smaller more indie fare that otherwise might have passed beyond the range of my movie radar. These discussion bring a new perspective to my primary nerdy pursuit: Movies! It’s nice to find somewhere I just fit in.

Which now leads me to this week’s prompt: What is a movie that just fits in with you? Movies that speak to your past experiences, maybe the soundtrack is a bunch of your jams, the aesthetic, jokes, actors etc. all from parts of your life that you love. This movie is not necessarily your favourite, and perhaps even the movie does not fit now, but at the time you watched it, there was a perfect gelling with the you of the past. This is the case for me and the movie The Crow. I was an angsty counter culture teenager when this came out, a nerd who was reading a bunch of comic books that no one outside my inner circle of friends had ever heard about. Listening to Nine Inch Nails and other similar music at the time this movie just fit in with me to the point that I gave it’s many sequels the benefit of the doubt. I still do love this movie even though it does not fit as well with current me, that feeling is still there somewhat or at least the remembering of how it used to gel with me gives me some good feelings, nostalgia can be a heck of a drug sometimes. Also it is a really good movie either way, that helps too.
