30 Day Fictional Settings Challenge, Day 28: Tabletop & Board Games

Box art for the board game Forbidden Bridge.

Because I miscalculated and needed an extra category, let’s take a day to discuss games that are played without a screen (or at least, without a screen as part of the game itself). From basic board games such as Monopoly, to more involved roleplaying exercises like Dungeons & Dragons, lots of “analog” games feature places as an integral part of the gameplay. The prompt: What are some of your favorite settings–either immersive or evocative–in the realm of tabletop gaming?

Board Bonus: Is there a game that you feel deserves special recognition for great art and design work on the included physical pieces, especially the playing surface?

Designer Bonus: Do you design games yourself? If so, do you have any particular thoughts to share on your favorite work, your process, or the secret to great playability?
