American Dad! Season 21 Episode 10 “Idiot Rich”

In which Jeff is both Jeff and money…

Jeff has been part of the fabric of the show since the beginning, even if he wasn’t technically a Smith until he and Hayley got married. And he’s always been the dumb, easily manipulated one. And today’s episode is no different, but it does keep it fresh while delivering some solid laughs.

The family needs a new car but gets kicked out of the dealership for financial problems. That’s when Suze Orwoman (Roger) steps in and tries to show Stan what the family does or does not contribute financially. It is declared that Jeff is the moocher of the family (in parody song form). While at first Jeff doesn’t get it, he eventually gets a job to prove he’s not just a mooch. The job is in construction and of course he gets injured the first day on the job.

Let me tell you about Jeffrey the Moocher

Jeff receives a large settlement and the family is ready to spend it for him. Hayley tries to talk Jeff out of spending it on stupid things but he ends up blowing it on bad investments (pants that hides the sounds of farts but make them smell worse). This makes the Smiths believe that Jeff needs a Conservatorship (also known as a Guardianship. The thing that Britney Spears was in the news for). It’s Hayley vs. the rest of the family for control over Jeff and his money. The Judge hears the case and decides that none of the Smiths deserve to be conservators. Instead, Suze Orwoman is appointed to oversee the money.

Roger as Suze Orwoman, in the episode’s homage to North by Northwest

Of course, things end up at the new Langley Casino with Roger’s Suze Orwoman having held Jeff captive. This escalates to a North by Northwest confrontation on the Orwoman Mt. Rushmore. The family tries to get Jeff to sign over the Conservatorship but they end up slipping. Jeff rescues them and agrees to sign the papers not because he’s dumb but because he wants to stay with the only family he has.

Notes

Final Thoughts– A strong episode the whole way through. I think that there’s enough left in the tank for Jeff episodes that they can remain a good vein for stories and this was no exception.
