Evil Recapped – Fear of the Unholy

David is announcing to the churchgoers that the church will soon be closed, and they will be reassigned. He gets a note that says “from a friend” but, y’know, in Latin. The Team is being assigned one last case involving a professor who is the best theoretical physicist in the world who wants to help the Vatican for some reason, but there’s a rumor he used to be involved in the occult.

The team meets Dr. Taupin and his assistant Neil. I hate him immediately for the “soft science” bullshit and he further proves he’s a jackwagon by sexually harassing Kristen. He has a history of being a creep, evidently. Ben disappoints me by asking if he was “just joking” and Kristen should have hit him right on his tinfoil covered head for that.

Back at the church, the Team is collecting the relic. Someone Catholic explain this to me: does every church have to have one? How many relics can there be?! Anyway, this one is missing. Sister Andrea sees some ghosts desecrating the church in various hilarious ways, seemingly because of this lack of a relic.

David goes to The Entity and meets a new creepy guy, so he’s of course played by Denis O’Hare. This one is Vatican security, and he believes that since David is angry at the church as a whole, he may act out in some violent way. He’s being assessed due to this concern. The assessment involves a lot of questions about Leland and The Sixty. Then they ask if he’d lie for Kristen and after thinking about it, he says yes.

Ben gets a call from Dr. Taupin who tells him something is there with the doctor, just outside of his peripheral vision. Then the call goes weird and demonic, and Djinn appears.

INTRO! 17 minutes in. “There are subliminal glimpses of sex and violence in this intro, but sure, go ahead and skip it.”

Father Ignatius wakes to banging noises in the church. It’s Sister Andrea looking for the relic using inefficient tools for the job. Despite this, they find the relic and Ignatius will need a rabies series. Something seems to be missing from the relic though.

David is listening to extremely obnoxious jazz at Leland’s new house and looking at a disturbing painting showing the apocalypse. Honestly looks like something they used to show me as a kid in the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The face in the center opens her eyes. Leland arrives and David kneecaps him. David asks why Leland left The Entity, and Leland says he had to see the worst of humanity and the supernatural and turned nihilistic. Leland argues that The Entity did not want David to understand free will, which is insulting as David seems pretty aware of free will. He also says that once The Entity gets to the point of giving that assessment, it’s all over for you.

David returns to The Entity and reports that he convinced Leland that he, too, distrusts The Entity. Layers upon layers, David! David asks what will happen when this is all over and is told his old handlers are no longer available.

Cut to Leland watching inspirational dog videos and crying. Amazing! He cuts to a street fight compilation.

Back with Dr. Taupin, who denies the sexual harassment and the phone call to Ben. The church really wants The Team to approve working with him.

Ben is trying to figure out how to hack a voice box and his sister is helping. Something she says helps Ben figure out what’s going on with Dr. Taupin, as what Ben was hit with in the particle accelerator is used in ALS treatment.

David tells Sister Andrea he’s losing some faith, and she finds a demonic parasite on him. They go to check Dr. Taupin for any, but it’s not the doctor that has a demon: it’s Neil. Sister Andrea to the rescue: the grabs a steak knife and gets him right in the cheek. Dr. Taupin begins bleeding, too.

At the hospital, Neil staples together his own cheek. Yeah, bro, not surprised that hurts a lot. The doctors want an MRI on Dr. Taupin, but Neil says no: he says a communication device the doctor had installed, a cerebral path, would do poorly in an MRI. This could cause the erratic behavior of the doctor.

Back at the church, Sister Andrea is hearing demons. If I were Father Ignatius, I’d be wary of helping with stuff in the walls again. While they wait for the demon in the walls, the two discuss faith and good vs. evil. It’s touching. Then Sister Andrea stabs a demon.

David goes to talk to Leland. Leland says David will need protection from The Entity. David says he wants Kristen safe from Leland, who counters that all he wants is for Kristen to curse God so he can defile her! Oh, okay. After this discussion, David reports back to The Entity and tries to quit but is told he’s been reassigned to Vatican Security.

At the church, Sister Andrea is torturing a demon. Eventually the demon confesses to eating the relic. Sister Andrea cuts it right out of him. Well done finding it first go, Sister Andrea. I’d probably have to dig around in there for a bit.

Dr. Taupin wants to live forever in the Cloud. Depressing. The team approves him despite the fact that he’s an asshole. The Team is rewarded for their years of service with bottles of wine. Those better be worth a fortune! David tells the team he’s been reassigned to Rome, saying he has no choice in the matter. Maybe he doesn’t understand free will.

Kristen and David are home alone, each watching their doppelgangers. David is talking to Sister Andrea, who has been reassigned to a silent retreat upstate. Sister Andrea cuts another demon parasite off of David. They say goodbye to the church. THE END.
