Before we get started, some basic introduction stuff. 400 of you wonderful folks participated in this survey! Thank you all for participating, and especially thanks to those of you who gave your input on how to word questions and answers, especially our BIPOC and LGBTQ+ Avocados. We’ll get started with the basic Avocado demographics first.
notes:1the original question asked for ages in five year increments, except for the 40-49 block. To make the comparison make sense, I combined the 30s and 50s into a ten year block. If you’re interested, here’s the data: 30-34: 76 35-39: 85 50-54: 40
24 people declined to answer
3 there was also an option for under 18, but no one chose that
notes:44 people declined to answer
5332 people identified as white, and 317 as only white. I left them off the graph because it would have really screwed with the way it looked.
notes:6In case this is confusing, here’s a brief explanation of the top graph: 305 people used the word “man” to describe themselves. 301 people either said “man” + “cisgender” or didn’t specify cis or trans or anything else (so I assumed cisgender). Same thing for “woman”: 81 said “woman”, 70 said “woman” +”cisgender or nothing.
notes:7 avocados with children are overwhelmingly married: of the 102 people who have children, 87 are married
8 other avocados with children: 9 divorced, 7 single, 3 with a long term partner, and 1 “it’s complicated.”
Where are we?
note: 9The overwhelming majority of Avocados are in the US: I left those 326 people off this graph because, again, it would have very much screwed up the format!
note: 10309 people were born in the US, again left those off to make the graph easier to read
note:11 these are user-reported regions, they don’t necessarily correspond to the state/province/city answers below as we didn’t clearly define the regions in the question
note: 12 the reason “the Jersey Shore” got put under “Northeast USA”: all New Jerseyans reported themselves as part of either metro NYC or Philadelphia (unsurprisingly), only one person said “The Jersey Shore.” Thus, they got put in with NH, ME, VT, and RI.
note: 13 all the Avocados in Illinois reported themselves as living in Chicago, or Chicagoland. All the Colorado Avocados are in Denver. Everyone in Minnesota said “Twin Cities” or “Minneapolis/St. Paul.” All but two Oregonians said Portland.
And now, for the non-Americans:
What Languages do we Speak?
note: 14 unsurprisingly, 369 people replied with English/American English/British. Left those off the “Native languages” graph.
What do we Believe?
note: 15 with 128 people raised Catholic but only 24 currently practicing, “lapsed Catholic” may be the Avocado’s largest religious group after Atheists
16 to save space, didn’t include the various types of those currently practicing Judaism: 1 Conservative, 2 Reform, 1 Reconstructionist, 1 Orthodox
17 Dourif LeMoko wants you all to know he is NOT the person who replied with the Dune religion.
What do we do?
note:18 language was confusing on this question, I guess. It was meant to really ask about your job, but without excluding people who don’t get paid for their work, or “vocation”, but some people interpreted it as a yes/no type question, hence the 9 people who replied “paid.” We’ll work on that for the next survey.
Here’s an upvote for all of you!
How Do We Get Around?
note: 19 my apologies to the truck drivers for not including trucks on the list of potential vehicles.
How Do We Use The Avocado?
note20 the Avocado has not yet reached its 8th anniversary – that will happen on December 5th, 2023. Anyone who answered “more than 8 years” was moved into the “7-8 years” group. sorry for the confusion in this question.

24 every time I’ve shared these answers, I’ve had someone ask what “mixed-handed means. From wikipedia: Cross-dominance, also known as mixed-handedness, hand confusion, or mixed dominance, is a motor skill manifestation in which a person favors one hand for some tasks and the other hand for others, or a hand and the contralateral leg. For example, a cross-dominant person might write with the right hand and do everything else with the left one, or manage and kick a ball preferentially with the left leg.”
What are we Passionate About?
We have a lot of passions on The Avocado. Some people answered this question very broadly (“movies”, “television”, “books.”), and other people answered very specifically. To make this easier, I combined the specific answers into groups for the overview graph, and then made specific graphs for each of the categories.
note: 25 other passions: Anything camp, Anything related to queer pop culture, Brazilian pop culture, Comedy/Stand-up, Discussing pop culture with friends, Depends on the day, Generation X and Baby Boomer Pop Culture ,entertainment, Goofy stuff, let’s say podcast, politics, Pop Culture itself, Real play TTRP podcasts, FromSoft lore videos, The work of Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Theatre, British murder mysteries, period pieces
What about Pets?
and finally,
How have we changed?
The last time a survey (we called in a census then) was done was 2018. Since then, we have more kids, more pets, and more asexuals. you can see those results for yourself here: HERE
and that’s everything, folks. Please feel free to ask questions if any of the data is unclear.
