Sports Corner – August 28, 2019

On the cusp of the NCAA and NFL football seasons, all anyone is talking about is the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck.  I have to say, I didn’t really find it that surprising, given his long and painful injury history.  (He had a lacerated kidney!  That isn’t your run of the mill injury.)  But football players tend to stick it out because anything else is seen as “quitting.”  It’s kind of telling that there are other players calling Luck “brave” simply for retiring under his own terms.  The culture around football is as brutal as the sport, and it’s hard to blame Luck for wanting out of it.  I wish him well, and the best of health.
