Movieacados! I did something this past week and foolishly accepted a part time supervisor position at my work. Foolish because this gives me more responsibilities and a steep learning curve but not very much more money. Also now I lose a lot of my freedom but also get to manage people which is way worse than just handling my own job that I have done for 15 years and have gotten pretty good at in that time. On the plus side however, this does get me thinking of the nature of the hierarchy of the workplace and the place of a ‘boss’ in the movies.
Movie bosses are rarely the main character, for the most part they are side characters meant to drive the story forward or to either aid or hinder the other characters from achieving goals. They often can be comic relief usually due to ineptitude or the incredulousness of movie situations. A lot of the time in a more dramatic setting they can add tension by constantly harassing the workers to get stuff done or as they would often have background experience in life/work they can be sources of wisdom and help guide other characters through the story. It might be something as simple as a task that sets the main story in motion or perhaps it is something of a running joke like constantly bringing up a characters lack of covers on their TPS Reports. Bosses, annoy, help, hinder, facilitate, anger and many other emotions that even heighten the response in relation to normal interactions because they can carry more weight in regards to consequences, having a power dynamic affects the stakes the more power the better the stakes.
So changing the prompt ever so slightly from my usual ‘favourite’ I would like to know: Who is the best movie boss? Work, volunteering, or otherwise justified uses of the term, have fun and see you next week.
