News & Results
- The NFL has announced that it will be eliminating the Pro Bowl game after over 60 years, meaning we will no longer being able to watch fifth-choice guys playing flag football the week before the Super Bowl. Instead, All-Pro teams will be named for both conferences but not actually take the field. In modern championship-focused sports All-Star Games have become a poor spectacle and it wouldn’t surprise me if other leagues eventually follow suit, perhaps replacing them with international games as the NHL has done the last two years.
- Jakub Mensik and Karolina Muchova have won the US Open mixed doubles championship. I am still of the mind that four-game sets with no-ad scoring are not real tennis, much less Grand Slam worthy, but they’re likable players so good for them. Most of the final singles qualifying matches were delayed until today, with big names like Kei Nishikori, Bianca Andreescu, and Qinwen Zhang still looking to make the tournament.
- UEFA held the draw for the upcoming Champions League league stage. The draw is less exciting or easy to recap than in the old group format, but you can check it out here. Of note Como, LASK, Sabah and Viking will be making their first ever appearances in the Champions League era and Norway qualifying two teams for the first time in 27 years. Down in the Conference League, Inter Club d’Escalades became the first Andorran team to qualify for an UEFA league competition, joining fellow micro-nation team Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar.
