News & Results
* Amidst increasingly insane and racialized public discourse, the WNBA held their All-Star Weekend in Chicago. For the “orange carpet” event everyone dressed to the nines while the “Stud Budz” ran around looking like a combination of Troll dolls and the twins from The Matrix Reloaded. The rookie Azzi Fudd won the 3-point Contest, while “Team Washington” of Elena Delle Donne, Shakira Austin, and high schooler GiGi Banks topped the Shooting Stars competition. The All-Star Game doesn’t sound like it was a classic, but Jonquel Jones took home the MVP.
* The National Bank Open (aka Montreal, aka Canadian Open, fka Rogers Cup) announced that Novak Djokoivc & Jannik Sinner wouldn’t be competing this August. The attempts to turn both this tournament and Cincinnati into two-week (or week-and-a-half) affairs has resulted in a lot of schedule crunch, and it may be increasingly rare to see top players play both. This withdrawal also means that we will have a Masters champion that isn’t Sinner for the first time this year.
* Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua both won their tune-up fights ahead of a long-awaited British boxing superfight. However, neither exactly looked good, with Fury appearing subpar in the few clips available of the untelevised fight, and Joshua being knocked down twice in the first round by unheralded Kristian Prenga before getting the knockout himself in the second round. Joshua vs. Fury is definitely a fight that marinated too long in classic boxing fashion, but hopefully we’ll finally see it later this year, despite Dana White’s best efforts to force himself into the picture.
* Ukranian sumo star Aonishiki won the Nagoya basho with a 12-3 record and a playoff victory, his third win in the last five tournaments. Despite clearly not being fully healthy, Aonishiki dominated and should be returning to the ozeki rank.
* Tadej Pogacar has won the 2026 Tour de France, making it his third straight title and fifth overall. Thanks for saving me from having to learn about a second modern cyclist, Pogi!
* The Utah Talons won the Athletes Unlimited Softball League championship with a 2-game sweep of the Chicago Bandits. The Talons have won both titles in the fledgling league’s history.
