Butter'n HERBS Pringle's

Butter'n HERBS Pringle's

No one had signed up for the thread with under 24 hours to go, so…why not whatever random thing I just learned about?

Butter’n HERBS Pringle’s were a flavor of the beloved chip that was introduced in 1986, and…really, that’s about all I can tell you about them because, unlike some other discontinued foods, there’s close to no information about them on the internet. What did they taste like? (I would assume Butter’n HERBS but it’s anyone’s guess, really.) Why were they discontinued? Was it because a child died during a tragic threshing accident while consuming them? Will they return this year for their 40th anniversary? Is there a reason they wrote the flavor name in that unorthodox way? Who can say? I can tell you they existed at least long enough to generate promotional ice buckets, as shown in the header image. That’s something, right?

There was also a nifty commercial that brought out all the stars. Larry “Bud” Melman! Mr. Bill! Fred Flintstone! All there, to promote a flavor of chip that apparently ceased to exist in a few months!

According to the owner of one of the presumably very few animation cels from this ad, an unusual animation technique was used – a hole was cut in the cel, and a printed image of the can was slid into Fred’s hand. Assuming they used the same printed image for each shot of the sequence, they may own the only one. Truly, a unique piece of history.

Also, it appears Pringles stopped using the apostrophe on the can sometime right around the introduction of the flavor. Were Butter’n HERBS Pringle’s such a failure they took the apostrophe down with them? Let’s say yes.

Have fun posting!
