The Night Thread Gets In Line

The Barenaked Ladies header earlier in the week reminded me of one of the band’s songs that’s perfect for The Avocado. Behold, the time the band went to Arlen, Texas!

“Get In Line” was released in 1999 on the King of the Hill soundtrack. The music video, which is an absolute joy, was directed by the prolific Phil Harder. I don’t know for a fact the song was inspired by Dale Gribble, but…the song was inspired by Dale Gribble.

Fun fact #1: the song was written in hotel rooms in Copenhagen and Cologne while the band toured in Europe. By cross-referencing tour schedules, fans on the obligatory Fandom wiki figured out the exact dates were June 30th and July 1st, 1999.

Fun fact #2: the band wrote the song’s main guitar riff for a cover of Oingo Boingo’s “Stay” that was recorded for a movie but never released. The guitar riff was then used in live covers of Duran Duran’s “Rio”, before eventually finding a permanent home in this song. (I can’t find an embeddable video of BNL performing “Rio” in the nineties, but here’s one from 2009 because it’s a great cover of a great song.)

Have fun posting!
