- In 2019 the Hallmark channel aired a commercial for Zola Wedding Planners. A lesbian couple praise the site during their wedding vows. The ad was pulled from the network after a complaint. Then restored after even more complaints. Hallmark has since produced multiple queer romcoms. In search for the ad I found that a number of lesbian wedding themed commercials. I thought it might be fun to compare some here.
2019 – Zola – Easy Wedding Planner
Cute and harmless, with a kiss at the end. I like the brides’ contrasting outfits.
1997 – Johnny Walker Red – Revolution
A bride sips Johnny Walker on the way to her wedding. Her spouse to be is revealed to be a woman in a similar dress. Their kiss is tastefully obscured by a wedding cake. The tagline “Every Revolution Starts with a Splash of Red.” The ad is set in Australia. The country wouldn’t legalize same sex marriage till 2017. Perhaps we have Johnny Walker to thank.
2012 – iPhone X – First Dance
Another Australian wedding. Still not legal.
2012 – Expedia – Find Your Understanding
An old man wrestles with his feelings as he travels to his daughter’s wedding. Luckily Expedia provided a smooth travel experience. The brides picked a gorgeous outdoor venue. There’s another kiss, though it’s more casual than Zola’s.
EDIT: The brides wear matching dresses. The mother of one bride wears a fetching black gown.
2025 – MassMutual – Vow to Protect
This time we don’t see the wedding itself. A couple share their memories of the day same sex marriage was legalized in the U.S.
With marriage rights again under fire it’s important to remember they were hard won. Do you have a favorite rendition of a same sex wedding? Which bride wore the most stylish outfit? All clips are taken from the channel “Marketing the Rainbow.” A fantastic resource for the history of LGBT+ advertising. You can find my previous articles on queer commercials here and here. And more reviews of LGBT+ media here.
