The Box Office, Uh, Finds a Way — Weekend Box Office Report for July 4th-July 6th, 2025

Jurassic World: Rebirth held dominion over the box office this holiday weekend with a three-day take of $91 million and $147 million since opening on Wednesday. If we’re being nitpicky, that’s lower than the past three World films, but that’s to be expected when you switch things up with a brand new cast. Rebirth is being sold as a “reboot” (but not really) for the series while still maintaining its continuity, while at the same time it’s trying to go back to basics by having the dinosaurs in the jungle instead of the city. Rebirth was also fast-tracked by Universal for a summer 2025 release date, so take that however you will.

Incidentally, thanks to Rebirth, Scarlett Johansson is now the highest grossing lead actor worldwide. She was featured in marketing almost as prominently as her sharp-toothed co-stars, and it seems to have paid off. So far, the seventh Jurassic installment has made $318 million worldwide. Worth noting that 2022’s Dominion became one of the first movies to pass $1 billion globally post-COVID as the box office was still in recovery. Can Rebirth chomp up the same kind of milestone? Hard to say. Superman is on the horizon, as is The Fantastic Four: First Steps, so the market is going to be crowded to say the least going forward. Regardless, Universal is going to be happy enough to move forward with future entries, as Rebirth is intended to be the start of a new trilogy, because of course it is.

Rebirth was the only new offering to grace multiplexes for the Fourth of July, leaving audiences to feast on leftovers. F1 continues to speed along (the sequel had better be called F2 or else!), while How to Train Your Dragon is also staying in the sky. The news isn’t as good for Elio, which I can now safely say won’t reach $100 million in the states, as it’s running out of rocket fuel quickly. Even worse, M3GAN 2.0 isn’t showing anything even resembling legs with a plunge down to $3.8 million. Looks like we won’t be getting those five planned sequels after all.
