I’d Rather Just Sing! Best Musical Number in a Non-Musical Movie Tournament: Results

Final results are in!

In 4th place, it’s “Springtime for Hitler” from The Producers. The delightful-yet-wildly-offensive musical number won against a couple of solo dance sequences in the first two rounds (Tropic Thunder and Do the Right Thing), and knocked out two strong contenders from Monty Python (Holy Grail and Life of Brian) before being eliminated in the Final Four and then losing the consolation match in the championship round.

Next, we have “Bohemian Rhapsody” from Wayne’s World. The scene that brought Queen back into the mainstream in the ’90s defeated the Oscar winning original song from The Man Who Knew Too Much; a less popular tune from Blazing Saddles; the iconic disco sequence from Saturday Night Fever; and the supernatural dinner party routine from Beetlejuice. It lost in the Final Four against another Mel Brooks movie (Young Frankenstein), but managed to earn a victory over The Producers (34-28) for a third place finish.

“Puttin’ on the Ritz” from Young Frankenstein takes the second place spot. This one eliminate two different versions of “The Star Spangled Banner” (Christmas Vacation and The Naked Gun) and the surprisingly resilient songs from Jaws and Dirty Dancing on it’s way to knocking out Wayne’s World in the semifinals.

But ultimately nothing could hold a candle to “La Marseillaise” from Casablanca! The powerful scene easily defeated two Tarantino films (Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill), one modern take on Shakespeare (10 Things I Hate About You), and finally three difference Mel Brooks movies (Blazing Saddles, The Producers, and Young Frankenstein), winning the Championship round with a score of 42-19.
