Welcome to the Movie Club! Today’s film is Martin McDonagh’s first film, In Bruges (which I have been mistakenly spelling without the “s” every time I’ve mentioned it over the past two weeks lol)
In Bruges follows a pair of hitmen, Ray and Ken, played by Colin Farrell and Branden Gleeson, who are sent to Bruges on a trip after Ray’s first ever job in London goes south. The reason they are sent there is unclear at first, and during their trip they get into a small series of misadventures as they bump into various locals, tourists, and a film crew.
Martin McDonagh is an experienced playwright, and In Bruges was his first feature length film. It was released to a fair bit of critical acclaim, earning an 84% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.1 After being the opening film at the Sundance Film Fest in January 2008, it was given a limited release in 28 theatres on February 8, 2008, but its theatre count increased week after week, eventually earning $34 million against a budget of $15 million.2
- The word “fuck” is said 126 times in the movie, averaging 1.18 fpm (fucks per minute).
- In Bruges was once on the Hollywood script “Blacklist” which is a number of scripts that were well liked but unproduced.
- The paintings seen in the museum include: Death and the Miser by Jan Provoost, The Judgement of Cambyses, Gerard David and The Last Judgement by Hieronymus Bosch
