Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! When I saw the news that IDOLiSH7 was airing a special live broadcast to celebrate their 10 year anniversary, my first thought was “anime announcement?” and today I can proudly declare that dream has come true! That’s right, season 4 is happening![footnote]Along with a special movie compilation of season 1 and an anime adaption of a side story that focuses on the group ZOOL.[/footnote] This is all very exciting and not at all surprising because IDOLiSH7 is a pretty popular franchise in Japan. It consistently ranks at the top of joseimuke game sales charts, and it was the 26th best-selling media franchise in Japan in 2024. They’re also holding a special Anime 7th Anniversary Memorial Exhibition in Tokyo in a few weeks. And the third album was released in November. In other words, IDOLiSH7 is everywhere, and I couldn’t be happier! If you’ve never watched this anime, now is the perfect time to catch up (it’s on Crunchyroll). I’ve already written about how much I love this series here, so I won’t repeat everything today. But it really is one of the best anime I’ve watched. It may have a deceptively simple premise, idol group tries to make it big, but all the characters are interesting, the plot never stops, and the music is seriously catchy and fun. In fact, since we’re talking about music, why not check out their latest single from the new album?
And, as always…
What have you been watching/reading/playing/eating/listening to lately?
Happy Wednesday! 👹
