Let’s discuss any and all music here. Got a new artist who’s rocking your boat that you want to talk about? Post a video! Found out about that unearthed Coltrane album that has the jazz freak in you losing your mind? Lay it out for us! Have a theory about what your favorite band might do for their next album? Let’s hear it! Anything and everything music-related goes here.
This week’s discussion prompt: Major Label Debuts
Do you remember when some of your favorite independent artists signed to a major label? What happened? Was their major label debut just as good (or even better) than the music they made before? Or, with a bigger budget and higher expectations, did something get lost during the transition?
This week’s prompt was inspired by Major Label Debut, a relatively new podcast where Graham Wright (Tokyo Police Club, CBC Radio) interviews musicians, producers, and writers about what happens when bands sign to a major label. I basically don’t do podcasts, but I have been enjoying this one so far. To date, Wright has interviewed some of the people involved with the making of XO by Elliott Smith, fear by Toad the Wet Sprocket, Tim by the Replacements, Only Life by The Feelies…and, in the video above, Mark Arm and Steve Turner of Mudhoney discussing their band’s major label debut, Piece of Cake. And just last week, Major Label Debut released a new interview with Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum discussing their major label debut Hang Time on A&M Records. So if this sounds like something that might be of interest to you, be sure to check it out!
As always, any and all music-related posts are welcome. Have fun, and rock out with yr guac out!
