The Friday Politics Thread Celebrates Important Anniversaries

As we get ready for our weekend birb event, and continue to deal with the final weeks of the 2024 election, we must make our way through Friday.

Today is a big day in history that mostly historians talk about. At a turning point in the War of 1812, the British failed to capture Baltimore. During the battle, Francis Scott Key composed his poem “Defence of Fort McHenry”, which was later set to music and became the United States’ national anthem.

In 1862, Union soldiers found a copy of Robert E. Lee‘s battle plans in a field outside Frederick, Maryland. It is the prelude to the Battle of Antietam. Whoops!

And in connection to the news today, in 1993, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shakes hands with Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat at the White House after signing the Oslo Accords granting limited Palestinian autonomy.

But the most important thing? In 1985, Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan for the NES, which starts the Super Mario series of platforming games.
