Alien Hugs the Box Office — Weekend Box Office Report for August 16th-August 18th 2024

Well, I’m in a bad mood.

Oh, no. Not over Alien: Romulus doing well. No, not that at all. The Coraline re-release making the top five? Awesome.

No, I’m upset because I spent all fucking week preparing jokes for the release of Ryan’s World the Movie: Titan Universe Adventure for this report. And I’ve been left with nothing. NOTHING! No data at all, no numbers. I’m heartbroken.

Can I tell you that Ryan’s World: For Real, This Went to Theaters set a new record low for a movie playing on…more than 2,000 screens?!?! Well, officially, I can’t tell you that, but I’m going to just guess, hypothetically speaking, that it did. Maybe. Also…2,000 screens?!? Who the fuck approved that?!?!?

Alright, alright. Let’s talk about Alien: Romulus, which is not a film that is based on a YouTube series about some kid opening and “reviewing” toys. Can you believe this is the first fucking YouTube show to get a theatrical movie with a wide release?!?! Jesus Christ. Anyway, Romulus brought in $41 million this weekend, or more specifically, $41 million more than Ryan’s World the Movie: Clash of the Titans presumably did. Which I guess is a huge accomplishment.

The bad news—if we can call it that—is that Romulus seems to really be splitting audiences. Critics were on board for this one (primarily because it didn’t have Ryan in it, or his world), but I’m seeing a lot of internet reactions that indicate it’s quite divisive. So I’m not sure what kind of legs we’re looking at here, but hey, it’s not Saving Private Ryan’s World, which has a character who farts out the speech balloon “fart” just so you know that, yes, the character farted. Is that why this film aimed at actual babies got a PG? Does the MPA give a shit?

By the way, Coraline and Ryan’s World the Movie have the same rating. Makes sense, I guess, since they both involve children who have to deal with monsters for mothers. As previously noted, Coraline made the top five this weekend, which is fantastic, though I do have to mention this was a Fathom Event, so all tickets sold were at premium price. Nevertheless, this is a big deal, and for those keeping score of such things, the re-release for a 15-year-old animated film has eclipsed the entire box office gross of Borderlands.

Other milestones this week: Deadpool and Wolverine has surpassed Joker as the biggest R-rated movie ever worldwide, Inside Out 2 has beaten Barbie stateside, and Despicable Me 4 is now the second-highest grossing entry in the franchise domestically. And Ryan’s World the Movie did none of those things.
